Changing NBN providers

Looking at moving from my current provider to another provider so i'm doing research by looking glasses for providers i have interest in joining

This basically means that when a hop that outputs * * * it means that the router at that hop doesn't respond to the type of packet you were using for the traceroute (by default it's UDP on Unix-like and ICMP on Windows) and / or the router is configured to ignore ( or deprioritise ) ICMP ( which is possible )

NBN provides Layer 2 services only, which don't respond to trace routes and are not able to be pinged by end-users. The hop immediately after your home router will be equipment that belongs to your RSP ( Layer 3 ), not NBN. This isn't a recent change, rather it is fundamentally baked into the design of NBN.

Functionally there isn't any obligation for an RSP to have their equipment respond to traceroutes/ICMP. Depending on it isn't a good idea.

Whilst you are looking for specific results to specific locations and of course using these tools well inform who you go with.

My thoughts of changing ISP really end up being around price, what people actually report and customer service. The reason I like to try and get a report from an actual user is how variable the performance get get depending on location and how 'busy' the ISP is in that location. What is experienced in Melb might not be what is experienced in Syd when it comes to pings, routes and speed.

A favorite punching bag for some is the use of Vocus in a network. My personal experience when I was at two ISP's that used them was good speeds and performance 24/7. The only issues I did have was around churning to them, that in both instances took half a day due to a glacially slow churn process. But that was quickly forgotten and it was pretty smooth sailing from then on.

I guess, all we can do is a reasonable amount of due diligence, get a bit of a gut feeling about who we want to go with and letting it rip. Putting the Vocus churn process aside (may well be much improved by now anyway) it is really easy to move to a new ISP under the NBN. I guess if we are drawing up a list some thing to include in the consideration might be, Contracts, Cancellation clauses (some require 14 days for example) and sign up fees, and referral savings that we might want to consider.

Good luck with the search and I can see a wealth of information being provided as you search for a new internet home.

By extension, this is tacit admission that the TPG AAPT "IP-Line" or whatever, isn't valid outside their network or to any network beyond their control. It is more of a marketing term as the OSI layers are standard for compatibility.

This is also why speed testing to test servers MUST be outside their network or control or cross border / international to test peering arrangements if sufficient bandwidth and port speeds have been acquired.

Therefore when an RSP like Aussie BB states test against "our server", it is purely to make it easier administratively to collect data which really isn't a true measurement to begin with.

Peering arrangements aren't expensive per month per port - peering is like booking Port 1 of a 16 port Gigabit switch with Telstra on port 2, Optus on port 3 and so on and the Gigabit switch is owned and managed by eg Megaport or Equinix, who have their own DC and fibre protected links to other places. Some refuse to peer and instead have their own domestic and international links, having acquired eg dark fibre or submarine cables.
